The Director of Learning Technology and Design reports to the Sr. Director of Learning and Development. The Learning and Development function is part of the larger People Team within Extra Space Storage. The Director of Learning Technology and Design is a strategic partner who has strong project management, leadership, and instructional design expertise and can help us innovate as we grow. This role is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.  

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Manage, develop, and inspire a growing team responsible for training content and media for internal and external customers. 

  • Own, execute, and implement creative learning designs and complex project plans to achieve and deliver effective solutions. 

  • Provide practical and targeted reporting to key stakeholders in a timely manner; utilize dashboards and visuals to communicate results and trends. Consult on solutions to remedy issues and increase the effectiveness of learning interventions. 

  • Monitor and assess technology solutions and provide recommendations for integrating into new and existing learning curriculum. Research, identify, and partner with best-in-class vendors who offer meaningful enhancements to current solutions. 

  • Ensure documentation, supporting materials, change management, and communication plans are in place for effective rollouts of new/updated tools, applications, systems, or programmatic offerings. 

  • Consult with Sr. Director of L&D on differentiated strategies for various employee groups: field/retail, field management, corporate, call center, executive, and remote. 

  • Work in sync with the Field Directors of L&D to ensure operational training needs are met and measurement efforts between functions are consistent.  

  • Create, maintain, and market departmental Knowledge Base and SharePoint sites. 

  • Direct the use, engagement, and maintenance of Learning Management Systems and third-party content tools. Manage the ongoing integrations between learning platforms. 


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Behavior, Learning Design, or related field; Advanced Degree a plus 

  • 6-10+ years of professional experience in employee education or instructional design 

  • Experience leading and managing others, directly or indirectly 

  • Proven experience improving delivery of courses and learning experiences  

  • Demonstrated track record of developing strong partnerships with Senior Leaders, HR business partners, employees, and vendors 

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to market curriculum and programs effectively 

  • Demonstrated ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to inform strategic vision and explain the "why" for recommended learning initiatives, programs, and experiences 

  • Experience with WalkMe and Workday Learning a plus
