The Director of Product Partnerships is responsible for identifying and implementing partnership opportunities for a large and complex partnerships as well as growing other adjacent market products and services. The role requires an experienced business development professional who can identify potential deals, develop the tactics, and manage the teams needed to bring them to fruition. They direct all efforts to establish strategic product partnerships to enhance the customer experience, meeting tenant needs while driving top line revenue growth. Responsible for aligning marketing, brand, customer acquisition, engineering, operations, and product stakeholders to deliver solutions that complement the core storage business at Extra Space Storage. Success in this role is defined by the holistic value realized through these partnerships, including revenue growth, expense reduction, customer acquisition diversification, improved CSAT and NPS metrics and partner growth for starters.

The ideal candidate would have a unique mix of business development experience, relationship building magic, just enough technical acumen to be dangerous and an insatiable appetite for data driven decisions. The ability to understand the business holistically, drive stakeholder consensus, and sell your ideas for growth and innovation across the organization, with passion, are all critical skills. You will be responsible for defining, and then driving, strategy for growth with both a long horizon on objectives but also expected to have a laser focus on execution.

Self-Storage is a unique industry and to be successful the director must be familiar with self-storage, related verticals such as multi-family or commercial real estate or be dedicated to becoming a subject matter expert as quickly as possible.

The position reports to the VP of Product Development and will be required to travel frequently.

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Seek out, establish, and nurture relationships with partners and vendors to the mutual benefit of the partner and Extra Space Storage.

  • Define and drive strategy for integrated partnerships and complementary products and services that are not within the core focus of the storage side of the business.

  • Develop strategic plans across all digital partners including Value Proposition, Cross-Selling Opportunities, Co-Marketing Opportunities, and Integration Execution/Maintenance.

  • Develop the process for vetting partners for Value Proposition, Alignment to Product (Gap Analysis) and Collaboration with Customers and Engineering for execution.

  • Maintain a close relationship with Vendors, Customers, and Stakeholders to comprehend and communicate mutual needs, (and mutual benefit), and participate in the creation of necessary and timely solutions.

  • Work closely with Product, Marketing, Customer Acquisitions, Operations, and Engineering to align the vision and strategy for our integration roadmap with our overall company objectives and to ensure all requirements are understood and that delivery meets acceptance criteria.

  • Work cross-functionally with Business Development, Marketing, Sales, and CX to ensure that appropriate Integration Partners are being promoted, integrated and continuous feedback loops are created.

  • Work closely with Engineering on architecture, capacity planning, prioritization, and scheduling of integrations.

  • Owns the measuring and reporting on the value provided by Integration Partner’s offerings and provides regular updates to stakeholders on product priority, delivery, and adoption.

  • Provides exemplary customer service to our technology and business partners for onboarding, adoption, documentation, and maintenance of integrations and partnerships.

  • Prepare a regular market analysis on the self-storage market/industry landscape to ensure that we are working with the most optimal candidates to promote Extra Space.

  • Manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs.

  • Software development background, familiarity with Scrum/Agile methodologies is preferred 

  • Familiarity with modern software design, tools, services, etc.

  • Ability to thrive in an environment that includes some uncertainty and ambiguity

  • Curious, ambitious, unafraid to ask questions and learn but also humble, patient, and willing to learn and listen

  • Must be willing to travel, attend trade shows, etc.

  • Must have an executive presence; Strong written and oral communication, including large-group presentations.

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelors degree required. Business or Technology degrees preferred.  MBA is a plus. 

  • 8 year’s experience in a similar role and/or within product management or product marketing roles, or in positions managing B2B relationships, integrations, or other leadership roles.
